AppFlicks Exclusive Review:

Have you watched Shogun yet? If so, share your thoughts on its direction, cast and themes in the comments below.  I caught the first two episodes this week and thought they were fantastic. While I never read James Clavell’s novel, I did watch the 1980 mini-series and have so-far, found this modern re-telling, fascinating.

If I have just one complaint, it would be for the on-screen, subtitle translation of Japanese into English to stop! While the use of subtitles was fine for the initial scenes to portray the, “stranger, in a strange land” aspect, the rapid reading, gets old, quickly!

As it is 2024, I have a feeling this was ONLY done to comply with some Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) mandate. However, this is ironic, as whenever the Caucasian characters, such as John Blackthorne and  Father Martin Alvito are supposedly speaking in “Portuguese” the dialogue is heard as “English” from my soundbar, therefore, the same can and should be done for when the Asian characters are speaking in their native tongue of “Japanese” as well.

While I have no issue following the story via subtitles, having to focus on reading them, really takes-away, for me at least, from watching the actual, on-screen drama, action and emotion of the characters, as it unfolds.
