
Android users are once again stuck as Google Messages gets stuck at phone number verification for activating RCS.
- A recurring Google Messages bug prevents some users from activating RCS, leaving devices stuck with SMS.
- Users have found that clearing the app cache and data for Google Messages and Carrier Services can fix the issue, as can reverting to a December 2024 version of Google Messages.
- We’ve contacted Google to learn more about the issue.
Update, April 4, 2025 (12:44 PM ET): We have now heard back from Google regarding our inquiry into this problematic Messages behavior, and the company confirms that it has both received these reports, and is doing something about them:
We’re aware of an issue affecting a set of Google Messages users and have a fix rolling out in an update next week. We appreciate the feedback and will continue to work quickly to address any messaging issues users might have.
