Origin of the JoulePeppers?

Since we’re talking about the rainbow of “peppers” planted across AppFlicks, perhaps you are wondering why AppFlickers “rate” everything across the network with their choice of 5 peppers, instead of offering a traditional “like” or “thumbs-up” emoji?

How did we come up with that name, JoulePeppers, anyway? Well…before the idea for “AppFlicks” came about, the site you are on, was originally going to be named AvantScreen or CineGarde, due to the disruptive or avant-garde nature of streaming media over traditional distribution methods such as Movie Theaters, Blu-ray, iTunes of Netflix. As the concept developed, our founder thought the name did not fully convey or reflect the overall mission as “cinema” does not cover video games, music or television.

Why AppFlicks?

As cinema was top of mind, the derivative, Flicks was bandied about for some time… Flicker is a visible change in brightness between cycles displayed on video displays. In terms of films, due to early cinema technology having a low framerate (speed of still pictures shown per second), the film would “flicker”. As a result, movies were nicknamed “flicker shows”, later “flicks” or as more commonly used, “Chick Flicks”.

Why Cine?

A movie theater (American English), cinema (British English), or cinema hall (Indian English), also known as a picture house, the pictures, picture theatre or the movies, is a building that contains auditoria for viewing films (also called movies) for entertainment.

We then considered going with CineFlicks or AvantFlicks… before asking this question, What are AppleArcade, Netflix and Spotify? They are all…streaming Apps! Thus, the name, AppFlicks. Not only did it flow off the tongue, better than the other choices, surprisingly, the domain name was still available.

With AppFlicks registered, our “Chief Auteur” never lets a good idea go to waste, he thought “cine” would be a catchy enough “catch-all” for our sub-themes. So from CineGarde, came the name, CineTaste, for tasty news and then, CineJoule, for spicy reviews, etc… Beyond liking the sound of it, let’s continue to use Wikipedia to further define our origin story, a bit more.

But how would users “like” or “rate” all of the content? Throughout his life, our Chief Auteur has loved spicy foods from all over the world. Naturally, he wanted to share this love of chili peppers and combine them as the basis for the ranking metric. His passion for entertainment and spicy food was found in his first Website, Ron Reviews where he referenced his ratings based on how spicy they were.

With this at the back of his mind for decades, he knew, if he ever had the chance to start-up another review site, it would involve spicy peppers. But how to easily describe or measure this? Remembering a discussion with a friend, about how hot sauce is ranked, he remember the Scoville scale.

What is a Scoville?

The Scoville scale is a measurement of the pungency (spiciness or “heat”) of chili peppers, as recorded in Scoville Heat Units (SHU), based on the concentration of capsaicinoids, among which capsaicin is the predominant component. The scale is named after its creator, American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville, whose 1912 method is known as the Scoville organoleptic test. The Scoville organoleptic test is the most practical method for estimating SHU and is a subjective assessment derived from the capsaicinoid sensitivity by people experienced with eating hot chilis.

While this scale would be the perfect application to streaming media, “CineScoville” just wasn’t catchy enough. Further brainstorming led him to another measurement of heat or energy, that was the joule.

What is a Joule?

The Joule is a derived unit of energy in the International System of Units. It is also the energy dissipated as heat when an electric current of one ampere passes through a resistance of one ohm for one second. It is named after the English physicist James Prescott Joule.

Combine the four elements from above, you can see how Ron Reviews evolved into AppFlicks, to create the CineJoule: JoulePeppers and our Icy to Spicy, 1-5 Pepper Heat Scale to rank all of your favorite streaming entertainment media across our network.

Hopeful, this article provided you with some interesting, behind the scenes insights about our brands, as well as defined how our universal JoulePepper rating system works to derive critical, ranking percentages of entertainment fans across the globe.
