Original film, depicting the horrors of propaganda on children in war-torn Africa…

This Netflix original drama, is a war movie depicting life during civil unrest across Africa. Its impact to children; how it molds them from innocent and happy little humans into heartless beasts. It was heart breaking to watch how kids were brainwashed into rebellion. And not just kids, even adults were easily turned as guerilla soldiers.  A warlord (Idris Elba) took advantage of the lowlifes’ depressing situation during the civil war in Africa. Giving them false hope, turning them into soldiers and tearing their souls apart transforming them into puppet beasts.

The film started by showing Agu (Abraham Attah), a witty lad, trying to sell a television frame showing different channels of live theatricals that is hilarious. First part of the story is focus on his life in the buffer zone then, turns out the government want all the villagers to leave the place for government to take over. Women and children were sent away while, men in the families remain behind. These men were killed including Agu’s father and brother. The story drags a bit until heart wrenching scene where, Agu was left behind by his mother and both his brother and father were killed by Army. This tragedy transformed happy Agu to a vengeful being. He was used and abused by rebel’s commandant who intensified Agu’s hatred. Despite the beastly character that Agu become, he formed a friendship with Strika and cared for him. Agu still talks to God and reflects on what he is doing and what is happening around him. His conscience is dimmed yet it tried to stirred him to the right path most of the time. Many sacrifices were made for no cause at all. They know that what they are doing is wrong but then, in their minds it could also be the right and best thing that they can do for their dead family members.

Many lose their lives in fighting for wrong reasons. Some choose the wrong path even though, they were offered a new life and a chance to become better person. We must educate our children with the right teachings because, they are the hope of our future. With good foundation, they will have anchor and they will be steadfast. Nobody ever wins a war. Everybody LOSE one way or another.

This movie tells a story of life lessons not eveybody has been able to fully understand or grasp. This is definitely a good recommendation to watch if you find yourself questioning your beliefs and culture.
