Get ready to stand on the edge of a chair and do “The Crane” or more safely put a Japanese bandana on your head… With popcorn by your side, it’s time to talk about Cobra Kai, the follow-on series to the classic The Karate Kid (1984) film. The TV series is set 34years later, in present day California with actors Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprising their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence along with many notable cameos from the feature film and their sequels.

The streaming series debuted on YouTube Red (now YouTubeTV) in 2018, with Season 2 following in 2019. YouTube decided to cancel the series after Season 3 was completed and Seasons 1-3 were picked up by  Netflix in 2020. At the time of my review, a fourth season is currently being filmed.

Seasons 1-3 are the only original content (that I’m aware of) that I’ve watched, that were specifically created for YouTubeTV. While the production is not as high as some shows that I’ve seen on Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV+, Disney+ and Netflix… I don’t believe it was intended to be as the series is a bit more like an action-packed sitcom / soap opera. While you won’t find any spoilers here, I highly recommend you watch all 3 seasons as the show is quite enjoyable. The story is contemporary for a modern audience, yet pays both proper respect and homage to the source material, characters, time period and themes that it succeeds.

I have watched many Netflix original series and films, to date, and they are of high quality, notables, so far have ranged from Extraction and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. I look forward to what Netflix will bring to the upcoming Season 4, perhaps elevating the overall production quality as the cast, script and direction have been great. I will continue to review and discuss more Netflix content across AppFlicks.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on Cobra Kai (2018 – 2021) or other Netflix / YouTubeTV original series.
