AppFlicks Exclusive Review:

Have you watched Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire yet? As the tale goes, Rebel Moon was initially pitched to Lucasfilm as an original “Star Wars” film. Going-in, that sets expectations high and immediately had me making comparisons, I wish I weren’t.

What did you think about the streaming film or director Zack Snyder’s work in general? I generally appreciate director Zack Snyder’s films, his approach to both writing and directing his own material. That said, his plot twists and character motivations sometimes feel like they are trying so hard to be original or different than what we’ve come to expect in similar material, that rather than being wholly derivative, they come off as being awkward. Consider when you see a photo, video or hear an audio recording of yourself, where everything seems a bit uncanny or just slightly off, because you are so used to seeing yourself in the mirror or hearing yourself in your own head. Snyder’s material is not unoriginal, it just doesn’t feel novel, either.

While I did not love Part One, I was certainly entertained enough to want to see Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver (2024), which drops onto Netflix on April 19th. If you’ve not seen it yet, you need to get caught up, before the sequel is released.
