Mad Scientist or Sad Scientist?
Rick and Morty is a cartoon sitcom made by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. Its pilot episode made its debut on Adult Swim, around late 2013 with the episode “Pilot”. The show’s theme may not be a family friendly show but ironically tackles family issues that a lot may relate to.
Rick Sanchez is a scientist gifted with “an IQ over 300” making him the smartest guy on Earth. He travels from dimension to dimension with his signature portal gun that he invented. He goes on adventures with his grandson, Morty Smith, the other protagonist from the title of the show. Despite them frequently arguing and being not so wholesome, it cannot be denied how they care for each other whenever one is in trouble.
At first glance people would think this show is actually about Science. Partially true but the said Science is a different branch from what is expected. Despite seeing these cool inventions made by Rick Sanchez, it cannot fill the emptiness in his heart. He is seen to get drunk in multiple episodes and belittle people around him, cussing them out. He has a strained relationship with his daughter’s family, even Morty who is always with him for the majority of his adventures. His intelligence is seen to be his strength as well as his weakness because of how easy things are for him. It can be difficult for him to entertain himself because he knows everything and can do everything.
Rick and Morty is a show that is written ahead of its time. This show, beyond its intergalactic adventures, is able to tackle toxic relationships, mental illness, and also trauma in a very realistic and humorous and also offensive way. There are so many issues and flaws within these characters but it’s what makes them and the show interesting to watch.

I’ve seen this series in Netflix. Kept it running in the background while, i’m working. Most of its story lines and wisdom are for adults.
There was one time when Morty was failing his Math yet Rick let him skipped classes and bring him along on his adventures. They tried inception on his Math teacher to influence him in giving Morty high grades. Pretty sure, some of the kids have thought or imagine the same thing.🤣
I like the show. It tackles different topics; relationship, politics, family, science and a lot of out of this world places. He looks sad and self-centered to me that’s why, he never stops creating and working on his weird inventions.
