Review: Coming Soon!

I caught The Matrix (1999) and The Matrix: Resurrections (2021) on IMAX over the past three weeks. Due to the holidays, I haven’t had the chance to write a complete JouleView Video Review, yet.

Have you watched The Matrix: Resurrections (2021) before? What did you think about the film, its direction, cast, the story, cinematography, soundtrack and overall themes? Watching the original, in its 2 night only, IMAX run, was a treat. the 1999 film held up well, however, everything that made this film special, has now been copied, countless times over the past two decades, that nothing really stood out. That said, I went with someone who had never seen The Matrix before and their reaction was 4.5 of 5 JoulePeppers, so that’s rather impressive. The same cannot be said for the 2021 The Matrix: Resurrections. Why? Well, like other soft reboots, such as, Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) and Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013) or even to a lesser extent, Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), as it was at least, enjoyable… Audiences are not interested in mash-up of a prior trilogy’s story beats, rewriting or undoing classic plot points as an excuse for why we’re revisiting old ground with the return of some familiar faces, additional new characters that seem to be on par with or better than the legends in a tale that feels shoehorned to suit the new narrative.
