Did you see the original Top Gun (1986) in theaters? Have you had the chance to watch the biggest and perhaps, best film of 2022, Top Gun: Maverick before? What did you think about the new film, its direction, cast, the story, cinematography, soundtrack and overall themes?
Where to begin? It’s so rare, for any film, not to mention a sequel, that arrives 36 years after the classic, to not only capture the same magic of first film, it builds upon that film, while remaining true to the values of the original source material, its story, its characters, its tone are congruent without being derivative, yet fresh, for a modern audience.
It would appear that both actor Tom Cruise and his alter-ego, Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell are exactly what global audiences wanted and needed in Summer 2022. At the time of writing, Top Gun: Maverick has unexpectedly shattered every 2022 Box Office record, with its US$1.454 billion take, making it the 5th highest grossing domestic film and 12th highest globally, of all-time.
